SULLEN is: Terry Geil Pat Wombacher Scott Young |
About SULLEN: Sullen is a three-piece band that doesn't really like labels, so they prefer to go with the general description of "Hard Rock". They formed in the summer of 1997 when long-time musical companions Pat Wombacher and Terry Geil decided to create a band that was a little more "accessible" than their previous efforts (which includes NW death metal legends VICTIMS OF INTERNAL DECAY). Their idea was to create a band that sounded somewhere between Kyuss and Nirvana (hence, two of the bands heaviest influences). They initially found drummer Jake Quinnett, who ended up moving to Denver, which suddenly left Sullen without a drummer. It was then that Pat and Terry recruited long-time friend and drummer extrordinaire, Scott Young. The three quickly clicked on a musical level and with their varied musical influences, a certain "style" was achieved. Over the last 8 years they have written over 50 songs and play a plethora of semi-obscure covers(ranging from G.G. Allin to Ween). Their first show was Dec. 13th 1997 at the First Round in Albany OR. They continued to play as many live shows as they could in the Linn, Benton and Lane County area. In the spring of 1998 they recorded their first demo, spawning such Sullen classics as "Gettin Used To It" and "Sometimes Why". Then, that summer, they released thier first live CD(Live@the Venetian), which included such hits as "Your Way" and "Limp". Continuing to play live and write, they snagged a "house band" gig at the First Round. They played four 45-minute sets, every other Saturday, for about 4 months gaining them major live playing experience, molding their songs into what Sullen has become today. In 1999, they recorded their 2nd demo, unveiling a more "epic side" of Sullen, with the drawn out rockers "Where It Is" and "Joined". The year of 2000 saw them venturing into an actual studio to record their self-titled full-length debut, which included songs like "Ripoff", "Mountain Of Pills" and "Shake Of Kill", that have now become live staples. With their growing number of Nirvana covers in their repertoire, they decided to do an all-Nirvana tribute night at the First Round. It was a smashing success, and BLEACH was born. Realizing they hadn't ever heard of a Nirvana "tribute" band, they thought it would be stupid not to have a "side-project" band that highlighted their number one influence. At this point, they kept playing and writing for the next few years, then released a "greatest hits" collection in 2004, including 2 new bonus tracks, "Weapons" and "The Path Of Least Resistance". But internal problems plagued them, forcing them to take an extended hiatus. On 9-11-2004, they played what was once thought to be their "final show". They kept doing the Bleach thing, but by the summer of 2005, their drummer was indisposed, and Sullen was thought to be history. After trying new drummers and not being able to capture that "sullen" sound, Scott was brought back into the fold in the fall of 2005, thus allowing them to re-capture that trademark sound they had worked so long to obtain. Now it's 2006 and Sullen is ready to rear it's ugly head again. On February 4th, 2006, nearly 17 months after their last show, Sullen returned to the Black Forest in Eugene OR, and played a set ranging from the soft-intro laden "Dose Of Cowardice" to the raging punk fury of "C.C.I." and "Everybodies Doin' It". They are currently writing new material and polishing up unrecorded gems, preparing to enter the studio early this summer. So they've pretty much went full-circle and are now ready to take on the world with their raw brand of "epic/hardrock/alternative/grunge/punk/post-hardcore/stoner metal" So watch for them... Because they are back...The Original Sullen! Not the "fake" Sullen from Illinois... Not the "other" Sullen from Texas... Or the ones from Sacramento or London or Kentucky...The ORIGINAL SULLEN FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY IN GOOD OL' OREGON. Rock On! lml |
